the ugly even knowlegeable chant: 2009

A student chant at Saint Mary’s University that includes lines about sexual activity and "no consent" has sent shock waves through the campus and beyond.

The chant during orientation week activities had stu dents spelling the word "young" by saying "Y is for your sister, O is for oh so tight, U is for underage, N is for no consent, G is for grab that ass, SMU boys we like them young."

As children of WWII we grew up with this chant playing hopscotch, marbles, cards- u name it...

- Growing up in a town that allowed no 'negros' or 'injuns' 2 taint our 'whites only town' in Nova Scotia- it was the norm...

Then the children of WWII- grew up and became the voices of the 60s, 70s and 4ward.... WE CHANGED THE WORLD 4 HUMAN RIGHTS AND UNIONS .... 2wards a whole new culture... boots 2 the ground - one community at a time..... many of us paid so dearly in little things... our $$$ went 2 downtrodden countries, homeless, charities, hopeless, disabled, fighting 4 rights of our gay brothers and sisters (and until u lived through the horror of AIDS butchering your beloved brothers and sisters... don't wear ur fancy flags.... until u wept, bled and stood up tall when it counted), racism, First Peoples of 10,000 years and so on... especially children (who have no power- no vote) ... especially women and girls... especially disabled- visible and invisible...

- We stepped up; many of us as Roman Catholics, and took the PAEDOPHILES DOWN... HARD... FAST... AND WE STILL HUNT THE PAEDOPHILE MONSTERS... and they fear us... believe me.... they know we can smell them.... and we tingle when we are near their e...v..i..l.

- 2day we are fighting bullycides.... bullying... sexual assault .... abuse.... child abuse (MINDRAPE- PHYSICAL TORTURE-SEXUAL ASSAULT) by the millions and millions and over one billion rising- globally

- in Nova Scotia we are fighting 4 an inquiry of NOVA SCOTIA HOME 4 COLOURED CHILDREN- and the years and years of black on black systemic child abuse.... and we...will...not... give ...up ...... and folks... we're white.

-We are cleaning out the PAEDOPHILES among us.... f**k who u are...

- ANONYMOUS inspires millions and millions of us to fight bullycide, bullying, child abuse and abuse of women and girls..... just ask Rehtaeh's family.... that beautiful beautiful child... and the vicious ignorance of schools, mental health, governments, communities.... and folks 2 damm busy 2 give a sheeet and students who walked over her good name until they ruined her soul.... like Courtney Brown, like Amanda Todd, like Jamie from Ottawa.

- and 2day St. Mary's University (my beautiful university) is crying the chant....following is a smart quote......

- WE LOVE OUR STUDENTS- they are brilliant, and this is a hard world where decency rules who u are and who u become..... thx SMU students

1) 4 standing up and admitting the crass -out of order chant- was indeed horrible- many of u have little sisters and brothers... nieces and nephews... cousins.... AND REHTAEH PARSONS's of Canada- is a guilt shared by each and all of us as Canadians- and we will fix this- r kids matter and Canadians are ripping angry- we cannot afford 2 lose our kids... imho.

-2)

Get involved with MADD and groups on drinking/drugging issues and NO MEANS NO groups- each and all of u... the white ribbon campaign of Canada is men standing up against assault of girls and women- MEN R TEACHING MEN AND BOYS- ABOUT BEHAVIOUR ALL AROUND THE WORLD... with White Ribbon.

-3)

Commend SMU- Union and kids 4 standing be4 the world - apologizing... and taking up the course of solutions and setting examples 4 a Canada- that someday all youngbloods will lead by example... falling down in error is easy.... getting up with grace and dignity and resourceful solutions are hard.... be we are counting on u darlins.... especially 4 all the Rehtaehs of this world....

AS THIS BRIGHT SMU STUDENT STATES, MATURELY,

"But Olivia O’Shea, a third-year student from Halifax, said expulsion should be on the table for those who allowed the chant to be inclu ded.

"I’m just disgusted by it, really. We all know better than this, and the worst part is, the whole point of going to your frosh week is to make good relationships and a healthy start to the year . . . so that you have a good experience, not that some girl’s going to end up raped in a room one night after a bad party."

O’Shea doesn’t buy the explanation that it was "just a joke."

"There’s really crude humour and vulgar humour, but you don’t use that as a foundation," she said.

"This is a lot of people’s first year here and their first time away from home. You don’t want to send them away with that (message), even if it is a joke."

IN CLOSING..... this is a smart move... Nova Scotians trust Wayne MacKay- he cuts through the bullshit and beans.... we love us SMU- let's make St. Mary's University - the foremost University in Canada leading our nation's youngfolks against bullying, bullycide, abuse, child abuse (mind rape, physical torture, sexual assault:)....

SMU hires MacKay to head up sex assault prevention council

September 6, 2013 - 12:10pm By Frances Willick Education Reporter

Saint Mary’s University has selected Dalhousie law professor and former Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission director Wayne MacKay to chair a taskforce on preventing sexual assault.

MacKay will lead a presidential council to make recommendations on how to create cultural change around sexual assault, foster respectful behaviour and promote safety on campus.

"As I watched events unfold at Saint Mary’s University over the last week, I saw that there is clearly more work to be done along the road I have already been travelling in relation to human rights," MacKay said in a news release Friday morning.

MacKay has previously served as the chair of the Nova Scotia Task Force on Bullying and Cyberbullying and the vice-chair of the International Centre for Human Rights and Democracy.

SMU president Colin Dodds struck the presidential council after a firestorm of protest against a chant during the university’s frosh week that touted rape.

Membership of the council has not yet been determined, but the university says it will include members from throughout the school’s community.

The council’s recommendations are expected to be released by mid-December.

Sexist SMU chant causes outrage

Orientation-week cheer mocks need to ensure women are of age or consenting

IAN FAIRCLOUGH STAFF REPORTER

A student chant at Saint Mary’s University that includes lines about sexual activity and "no consent" has sent shock waves through the campus and beyond.

The chant during orientation week activities had stu dents spelling the word "young" by saying "Y is for your sister, O is for oh so tight, U is for underage, N is for no consent, G is for grab that ass, SMU boys we like them young."

Third-year student Lewis Rendell, who also volunteers at the SMU Women’s Centre and is on the board of directors, was among those outraged after finding out about the chant, which was recorded and posted online and hit the media Wednesday.

"I was horrified. I was so disgusted," she said. "Esp ecially because (the centre) works so hard on campus to promote not only safe s ex but cons cientious, consensual sexual practices."

The chant took place Monday on the football field and involved 300 to 400 students, including 80 orientation week leaders.

Rendell said she’s been told the chant is a tradition but no one she has talked to remembers it being used any further back than 2009. She came to Saint Mary’s for her second year in 2012 but hadn’t heard anything about the chant before Wednesday.

She said the fact that such a chant has become a part of orientation week activities, despite increased education about respect and cons ent when it comes to sexual activity, "is just the ingrained rape culture that we see. It’s not just a university issue, it’s a wider society issue, but on university campuses, that sort of drunken haze, blurred lines (excuses), if you will, becomes more apparent."

There are a number of female stu dents in the video, chanting and clapping along.

"Rape culture is not discriminatory, it’s something that seems to be so ingrained in our culture that no matter how old you are or what gender you are, you can fall victim to thinking that things like that are simply sexually provocative but not illegal," Rendell said.

Saint Mary’s spokesman Steve Proctor said the university became aware of the chant Wednesday morning after the video was posted online.

"It would not be an understatement to say we were shocked and disapp ointed," he said.

Proctor said the university and the director of student services talked to student leaders before orientation week about the need to have fun but keep things "within bounds." A community police officer was even brought in to talk about issues around sexual assau lt .

"We had provided lots of guidance to the students association, so we were surprised and disappointed when we were told about the video and eventually saw it," Proctor said.

The university is requiring the orientation week leaders and the executive of the student association to attend sensitivity training on campus, and the executive to go to a conference about sexual consent next week at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish.

Proctor said the student association has accepted full blame for what happ ened.

"It was a serious, serious matter, and this wasn’t something we dictated to them , this is something we discussed together as a suitable way forward."

He said no further disciplinary action is coming .

The women’s centre, along with a sister organization at Dalhousie University, holds a conference each fall called Consent Fest, which includes panel discussions and workshops on issues of consent during physical interactions between people.

Rendell said she has extended an invitation to the student association executive to attend, in light o f the video.

Student association president Jared Perry could not be reached for comment .

COMMENT:

This is so embarrassing. The worst part is that it made national news, and reflects poorly on the universities reputation. In actual fact, this was nothing more than a few students with very poor judgement making a fool of themselves.

SMU frosh week chant sparks outrage

Dexter tells SMU frosh chanters to smarten up

September 5, 2013 - 12:46pm By DAVID JACKSON Provincial Reporter

Premier Darrell Dexter says the scene of hundreds of Saint Mary’s University students chanting about underage sex without consent was "very disturbing," but he also cautioned Thursday against an overreaction.

COMMENT:

"Second-year engineering student Bill Dimitropoulos said the chant was obviously a joke and that the fallout has been an overreaction.

"It didn’t really provoke me to want to rape women," he said. "It’s meant to have some fun and get people laughing and stuff. It’s not meant to promote rape or anything.""

No more appropriate than would be dressing up in black-face and singing songs about pickin' cotton. You wouldn't stand for that Bill, we won't stand for this. The intent is irrelevant, it is offensive and degrading. Make sure you're on the bus to St FX this weekend, you need an attitude adjustment.

COMMENT:

This is no mistake, it's dispicable and disgusting, and demonstrates the mentality of those students participating and the type of students this school attracts and it's ideology when it comes to sex, minors, underage. It scary to think these student will graduate with various degrees and enter the work world with this mindset of a acceptability.

The parents and administration should be proud of these prodigies they are trying to educate.

To say this is a mistake and in the heat of the moment is a lame excuse for how these individuals think. Any parent should seriously consider sending their teenagers to,this school.

The Administration needs to conduct some serious damage control and therapy for these warped minds.
